The U.S. energy sector is evolving, and women are key to its success.
Here’s Why.
Energy is undergoing one of the most significant workforce transitions in history. Over the next decade, energy employers will need to attract and prepare millions of people to power growing energy demands, infrastructure upgrades, and the energy evolution before us. Quite simply, without more women working in the sector, the industry will experience a critical talent deficit.
We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to ensure a dream-team workforce to engineer, build, operate, troubleshoot, and innovate the country’s energy ecosystem. That means construction, manufacturing, power generation and transmission, and all the other disciplines that make the country tick. With women comprising only 25% of the industry’s workforce there’s a significant void of talent and expertise missing from energy companies eager to attract top-tier talent.
Did you know?
- Energy careers offer not just strong salaries and benefits, but a clear path to leadership, impact, and economic freedom. Simply put, those are wins for pay, power, and purpose.
- While there’s a broad-based need for talent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects several industry roles will have higher than average growth rates including solar photovoltaic installers, wind turbine technicians, petroleum engineers and technologists.
- There is a particularly huge demand with energy employers for technical thinkers and solutioneers in the skilled trades, especially electricians, welders, plumbers and pipefitters, and other technicians. Publicly available and free training makes these roles easy to access.
- Not only are skilled trade roles in high demand but energy employers also need people for business roles – like real estate, IT, cyber, marketing, meteorology, finance, and a host of other roles that businesses.

Debunking the Myths
about Women in Energy Trades
While women are underrepresented throughout the industry, they are particularly absent from skilled labor roles, and unions and employers are eager to change that. Organizations and programs like Tradeswomen Build Nations, Women in the Trades, She Built This Nation, and a whole host of regional tradeswomen groups provide communities for women working in industry trade and extend hands of opportunity for those who haven’t considered these roles or don’t know how to get started. Some of that work starts with separating fact from fiction. Learn more about debunking the myths about women in energy trades.
